Review: Social Media for Academics

Firstly I should say that I have been looking at the first edition of this book. That came out in 2016, and a second edition came out in 2019. This is a review of the original edition.

It is full of sensible, level-headed advice. I don’t think there is anything here that renders it fit only for the attention of academics, except, I suppose, the discussion about publishing your work. But even then, as a teacher, I’ve contributed to academic work where there is an injunction to not reproduce it in blog posts or elsewhere. However, I was able to obtain their agreement that I could bring my chapter to the attention of a wider audience under certain conditions.

This book is very readable, and if I sound surprised that is because it’s not always true of academics!

There are also plenty of references, as you would expect, and suggestions about software. If you are in the academic world then this book is definitely worth reading.

I submitted my review of this book to Teach Secondary magazine, an educational magazine in the UK. The first review below is what the magazine published. The second one is what I actually wrote! In substantive terms there is little difference between the two, but you may find it interesting to see what the editor altered.

Is The computing Curriculum Too Masculine? Revisited 16 years later!

One of the apparently insoluble problems of the age is how do you encourage more girls to take up Computing? I think a lot can be done, and have done so myself, but I wonder how far a lot of the effort fails to get to the heart of the issue, which could be the curriculum itself, the way it is taught, or a combination of the two?
